Stories & Condolences

"Charles Bascom Pearce Charles B. Pearce, son of Allen and Susannah Pearce was born at Lebanon, Indiana, on July 27, 1865. When eleven years of age, he moved with his parents to Marian County Missouri. He resided here for about eleven years when he came to Custer County, NE., which place has been his home since that time a period of 52 years, on last April 27. On October 22, 1891, he was united in marriage to Sylvia Campbell, and to this union, four children were born two sons, Cecil M. of Arnold, and Nolan of Glendale, CA., and two daughters, Vera B. of San Francisco CA., and Gladys of Arnold, all of whom survive their father. Mr. Pearce owned and operated a farm near Arnold until 1919, when he moved to town, and turned the operation of the farm to his son, Cecil. In 1923, Mrs. Pearce was taken from him, and since that time his daughter, Gladys has maintained the home for him. Coming to this country while it was yet a new land, Mr. Pearce has been one of the most active in building up it a good place to live, He continuously worked for the betterment of the people willing to share their hardships with them and rejoicing in any good fortune that might befall them. He united with the Methodist church at an early age and maintained a very active membership as long as he was physically able to do so. He served in various public offices for many years, proving himself a true servant of the public. Thus, he leaves to family a record of which they might well be proud. For a number of months, Mr. Pearce has been gradually declining in health, and despite all Medical and nursing care, his race was ending, and on the evening of March 12, 1939, he went to his final rest, at the age of 73 years. Besides his children, he leaves three grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Lucretia Bonta of Arnold, many other relatives and friends, and neighbors without number. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Sunday afternoon, March 14, at three o'clock with Rev. C. R. Garver in charge. Three numbers were sung by a quartette, Miss Josie Messersmith, Miss Bernadene Dennis, Joe Fisher, and Gerritt Brower, with Miss Margaret Naylor as accompanist. The pallbearers were nephews of the deceased and were Bert, Paul Pearce, Edgar, Claude, Whaley and John Pierce, the latter of Callaway. Interment was in the Arnold Cemetery." - Norvin Pearce
